Trim It Or Treat It?

Hey, Dirty Girls!

Do you want long, beautiful and healthy hair?!

Of course you do, because you deserve it.

“Big Beauty” commercial ads won’t tell you this, but the key to growing those thick, nourished locks you crave is Regular Maintenance. Every 6 weeks, check in on your ends: offer them a healthy drink and ask how well they’re holding things together. Are they frayed and breaking? Lackluster, crusty or dry? If you’re feeling attacked by any or all of these conditions, it’s time to re-evaluate your regular maintenance regimen.

Trim it, or Treat It!!

If you are suffering from split and breaking ends, consider trimming or treating your hair.

I know what you’re thinking: “why would I trim my hair if I’m trying to grow it out?”

First, let’s freshen up on Biology 101:

Each strand of hair is a twisted rope of keratin and amino acids. Without regular maintenance, wear and tear will split your ends just like any frayed rope. The trick is to snip the split end before the split travels up your otherwise healthy hair shaft.

Second, all snips are not created equal:

A trim is not a cut. Trims are needed to keep the shape of your latest cut. Honing in on split ends only is crucial

To preserve length, I tend to do my dusting on dry hair first to see where the ends are.

Pro tip: Schedule a trim every 6-12 weeks and/or every Mercury Retrograde.

If you are striving for length but have not kept up on regular maintenance, a cut will suit you best. These are the real haircuts needed to restore shape and proportion.

As your stylist, trims and cuts require the same work. Whichever is needed will depend on your commitment to regular maintenance and self-care out of the chair.

The best way to prevent chemically treated hair is to avoid over-processing it. Duh — seems so simple, right? But with all the color and chemical services we use, it’s simply hard not to.

How to know if i need a trim?

She is crusty and dusty!

WARNING: Broken and split hair can not be reversed! Cuts and trims simply remove existing and prevent continued damage.

WHATS THE DAMAGE?

  • Chemical treatment such as lighteners (e.g. bleach) and relaxers

  • Aggressive over-styling & excessive heat (including sun exposure)

  • Excessive brushing & pulling

SELF-ASSESSMENT

  1. When running your fingers through your dry hair, do they glide all the way through or get stuck?

  2. Examine your ends. Can you see the ends visibly frayed and split?

  3. Recall the last time you style your hair. Are using more product than usual?

  4. Are you having a hard time getting your hair to look polished?

If you answered YES to any or all of the above,

YOU ARE DUE FOR YOUR NEXT TRIM!!!

Don’t be discouraged — reach out to your stylist to schedule an appointment and be sure to keep up on those appointments. Your hair will thank you.

The best way to prevent chemically treated hair is to avoid over-processing it. Duh — seems so simple, right? But with all the color and chemical services we use, it’s simply hard not to.

#1: Find your person.

Find a stylist that loves your hair as much as you do. Your hair is your personal and unspoken way of communicating who you are to the rest of the world — it shouldn’t be entrusted to just anyone.

#2: Treat yourself at the salon.

Ask your stylist for a Paul Michell Awaphui Kera-TripleX ™ treatment. This 2-step treatment hydrates and repairs broken bonds. You can also ask for an Olaplex™ treatment. This treatment is used in bleach or color and in the wash hose that help keep bonds intact.

#3: Treat yourself at home.

Try Dry Hair Use the Tea Tree Lavender Mint Mineral Mask™. This product is ideal for dry, coarse, moisture-starved or unruly hair. The creamy, ultra-rich mask contains natural French clay with nourishing, restorative minerals to help strengthen and hydrate. Use it at the end of a stressful day and feel how the comforting fragrance of lavender, mint and tea tree oil calm your senses.

Pro Tip- Apply to damp hair and comb through. Put hair in a low pony or braid and wear it as a protective style. Wear it all day or night to really let it do its magic, then rinse out.

If you regularly use heat on your hair, counteract the damage with a weekly treatment using the Neuro Repair. Use it in the shower in place of your normal conditioner. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse out. At night, add a few drops of the Lavender Mint Overnight Therapy on the ends as an overnight treatment that treats your hair as you sleep without the heavy left-over feeling.

As your OG Dirty Girl, I know all there is to know about healthy beautiful hair. The key to improving and protecting it is Regular Maintenance by treating or trimming every 6 weeks.  This is truly the foundation for building your hair rituals!
